Week 7, thing 16

In working with wikis I looked up Library Success; A best pratices wiki. I then directed my attention to Collaborative tools for librarians. I was introduced to a very popular wiki called Wikipedia. This site is fully editable which means you can edit, visit, read, re-organize, and update at will. There are two modes, document mode- create documents, and thread mode- discussion on document. Wiki allows people to collaborate, add, edit, and give insite on any given topic.
Wiki is interesting to me because it allows anyone to take part in a type of discussion that may not take place if not on a computer. What I mean is that you may be shy or live in an area with little people. Wiki and Web 2.0 allows for people from across the globe to communicate in a safe environment.
An application that will work well in schools is Documents mode and thread mode. A teacher or students may put a document for social studies including the most famous women in America. The teacher and other classmates may add to the thread by discussing opinions, or adding to the document by giving examples of more famous women. A teacher can keep up with the discussion and grade by participation. In a library, the librarian my have students give the source as well as a brief example of how they came up with the source.

Week 6 Thing 15

Web 2.0 Where will it take libraries? Into a New world of librarianship by Michael Stephens, Librarian Blogger writes about way librarians can engage in web 2.0 in the library. Some of his examples include web 2.0 tools such as read/write web, instant messaging, weblogs, and wikis as resources to further the library mission. Librarians always keep the mission and goals in check when making technology purchases. I like the idea of using web 2.0 in the libray and how he sticks to a plan of including staff and users in the decision making process. Many savy technolgy persons often make purchases without knowing how it will work with the public or less savy users.

Web 2.0 means to me- it allows for communication with the use of technology. It allows for instant results with a vary in degree. It allows for an opportunity to travel without leaving your home or school.

Web 2.0 means to the library- it allows students to gain access and communicate with things and others that would otherwise not be possible. It allows students to express talents in technology that would otherwise stay hidden. It allows for growth.

Week 6 Thing 14

Technoarati and tags. As i looked in technoarati and looked up School Library Learning 2.0 I noticed that a blog directory gave me a more narrow search of 258 results, while a blog post was very wide range and included bad words and uneducated looking info. It seems like no filtering is taking place and anything related to your search terms will come up. I learned how tags work with blog posts. A tag is a key word that describes your blog posts. If your blogging about a vacation at the island you could use tags such as vacation, beach, island, sand, texas. Now each tag will lead people to your blog even if they only type in sand. If this person is wanting to purchase sand to fill up holes in their yard, your beach vacation would be irrelevant to them, but will come up due to your tags. such as 834,950 results. These tools would not be something I would give access to due to the unfiltred content. I would however explain the benefits of having them and how district sites are safer to use and would show examples of tags in this area.

Week6 Thing 13

Del.icio.us is a great tool to use at all times. I is very important in the library to have bookmarks for teachers and students to have access to. If I get called to a class to fix a computer or need a specific site address that I do not have memorized, I can simply go to delicious and see my sites and reference whatever it is I need. This tool is also something I can see being used while I travel. While attending meetings you love to share ideas and sites with new friends and collegues. This is a great way to access your information without lugging your laptop with you. It is also a great place to steal ideas and share them with friends.

week5 thing 12

today I tried Rollyo. I set up a site and made a roll for reference sites for kids. My site lists possible sources such as wikipedia.org, answeres.com, encyclopedia.com, infoplease.com, refdesk.com, and britanica.com. This is another way to make searching for research exclusive and protected for student use.

week5 thing 11

I explored VuFind , this is like OPAC for libraries but gives access to online sources as well. I did a search for Dr. Seuss and got back 6,786 possible entries. That alot more than my OPAC at school will produce. I looked for other educational links but came up with little that I could use in the library.

Week 5 Thing 10

I created a comic strip announcing an upcoming book fair in my library. I used sourimage to save image and got a list of codes. Here is the site http://sourimage.com/ the image is under 2catinthe hat.

Here it is up top. I used the add image button and followed the steps to get it here. I think this is a great way to make a school website nice and attractive to students who may otherwise be reluctant to read your page.
